You needed a bigger switch since your 5-port unit was full. You checked out local recycling options and found Netgear GS748v3 models with 48 ports available for just £20. It’s performing okay so far, but you’re curious about removing some case fans to reduce noise, especially since it’s meant for rack installation and you won’t be adding many RJ45 connections beyond around 10.
With 10, you'd probably be fine as long as it has some airflow at least. Best solution would be to replace them with ones from the likes of Noctua, but at that point the fans would cost more than the switch
