About six months ago I purchased an ASUS VivoBook with an i7-8550U processor. Recently, gaming has caused it to shut down during play—specifically while using a multiplayer server on Steam and Gary’s mod. I’m unsure if the issue lies with the cooling system or the CPU itself. If it’s the CPU, should I try overclocking for better performance? Thanks ahead for your guidance.

Download HWmonitor and check the temperatures while gaming. Low 90s is high but ok, mid 90s is pretty bad and needs fixed, and anything within a degree or two of 100 or higher is a major issue that would potentially damage the CPU. Overclocking would be the opposite of a solution. In this case, assuming it's a thermal problem you would want to take the whole laptop apart and apply new thermal paste. If it's a power delivery problem... Just hope it isn't.

It seems there might be an issue with power delivery or thermal issues. Bitg cases can be problematic, but overheating often resolves by cleaning and avoiding heavy use.

It seems the device is likely shutting down to prevent damage from excessive heat. Disassemble it, clean dust with a can air, and consider reapplying thermal paste if necessary. As @toasty99 noted, HWMonitor can quickly indicate if a heat problem exists. Your external power supply might also be overheating and cutting power—check that too. GL

98c and 100c on core 1 indicate a significant heat issue. The maximum temperature for this CPU is likely around 100c. For optimal performance, consider opening the case, cleaning the dust, and applying fresh thermal paste before re-testing.

Intel Core i7-8550U processors run smoothly without shutting down due to speed alone. You might consider underclocking to prevent overheating, especially since cooling failed after just one year. Replacing the thermal paste could offer some improvement, though the temperature rise would likely remain minimal. Also, monitor your GPU temperature for better insights.
