I'm facing some challenges with VR on my older setup. I'm using a budget build with an Xeon e3 1230v2, a Ryzen 5 3600, and limited RAM. Despite some upgrades like an Enermax cooler, a larger SSD, and more storage, I still experience performance drops when running VR apps. The issue seems to appear when loading VRChat or other games, causing crashes or black screens. I've tried cleaning thermal paste, reinstalling drivers, and updating software, but the problem persists. I'm also using a Rift CV1 with two base stations and touch controllers, but VR is still unreliable. My other games function normally, though. I'm trying to balance performance with cost and can't afford another GPU right now. What options do I have?
Starting, what i see some upgrades you did which were not worth at all. 1. PSU Upgrade, should have bought 550W and saved some $$$ 2. AIO , should have gone with any 3 pipe Air Cooler and saved some $$$ And putting rest of the money for GPU upgrade. That 750W PSU is totally wasted even if you upgrade the GPU later-on, the CPU you are using will definitely bottleneck. Now coming to your issues. If all games are running fine assuming temps are also fine. It can be driver issues, or the support of the game with that GPU specifically. I'd say, use display driver Uninstaller, and then do a clean installation of latest drivers. See how it goes.
I started assembling the PC at the start of the GPU shortage, and the upgrades happened while the shortage was ongoing. The AIO and PSU were barely more than a low-wattage PSU and an air cooler, possibly around 50 dollars total. Back then, even budget GPUs cost hundreds of dollars. I’m sure I’ll try a dual boot and a fresh GPU driver install.
I attempted to update the drivers for my GPU and it improved performance for a short time. After about an hour, it crashed again with a black screen and driver error message, which I submitted. Despite sending multiple reports via email, I haven’t received any replies. I’m confused because I don’t understand why this is happening. I’ve tried almost everything except replacing my hardware, which I can’t do due to financial constraints and caregiving responsibilities.
