Earlier I owned a 5900 and switched to a 5950 because I couldn’t find a 5800x3d. In reality, I really pushed through many 5900 models—higher clock speeds compensated for fewer cores, letting the cache size be optimized for better speed. I experimented with various settings like Numa nodes, disabling cores, and even the 4+0 configuration, testing every possible CPU setup. From all that testing, the 5950 proved to be a strong choice. Although it might not match the 5800x3d in raw specs, my GPU (4090) isn’t limiting performance. The x3d versions do offer more cache, but with such powerful hardware, the difference is minimal. It’s also worth mentioning I use gaming and other tasks, so I got a balanced option that works well for me alongside my equipment and AMD’s optimization tools.
For numerous gaming scenarios CPU isn't the main concern (though it varies). At high resolutions like 1440p with a 4090, a 5950x is almost comparable to a 5800x3D and only slightly off from a 9800x3D for many games. Titles such as Factorio or certain MMOs also affect this dynamic.
