Turn-Based Strategy or a grand strategy game designed for email play.
Hey everyone, I've enjoyed strategy games both turn-based and grand strategy. I'm looking to play some with friends, but it's tough to coordinate for long sessions online. Do they still release turn-based titles that can be played via email? My goal is two players tackling a campaign over several months, making daily decisions that shape the story. This would give the experience of a strategic war, encouraging careful thought at every step.
Chess. I believe no actual "games" in the computer sense will be sent via email. You can still enjoy playing Chess or games with move notation through email.
We’ve actually played chess via email. It was enjoyable, but now I’m seeking something different to match that experience. I’m familiar with grand strategy games that offer an email play feature, though I’m not completely certain which one it is. I’m trying to locate the source of my information, otherwise I wouldn’t have shared it in my post.
This site offers a variety of games you can enjoy via email. Let me know if you need more details!
If you know boardgame called Risk, theres web based version called Landgrab (website is currently down). You can create custom games and invite players to them. When its your turn, service will send email to you. There's also option for how long turns you can have. I think 2 days is default for random games. Its not quite what you are looking for but seems close enough.
Thanks for the ideas. I'll try them once I have a stable connection again.
Configure SMTP details for multiplayer (use a fake Gmail account). Begin a Pitboss match. Game started!
I'm unsure about current versions for modern operating systems, though Stars! and VGA Planets were quite popular 20 years ago. Each participant took their turn before submitting a file to the game's host, who handled all rounds and delivered updates with results so players could proceed. The games focused on space exploration, colonization, or combat—similar to Masters of Orion—without the narrative elements.
