What should I check on my RAM? I have two 16GB Corsair Vengeance modules in my 5800X setup, each covered with a heat spreader. I’m worried about whether I can count the chips if I remove one, since it’s not something I plan to do long-term. Recently, I noticed my RAM price has more than doubled over the past six months.
Generally, an 1Rx8 configuration is considered inferior while a 1Rx16 setup performs better. More RAM modules are advantageous. When inspecting RAM chips beneath a heatsink, simply view it from below; they should be visible unless the chips are fully enclosed by the heatsink.
He explained that 1Rx8 performed better than 1Rx16 since each 1Rx8 had its own dedicated "librarian" compared to a single librarian in an equivalent 1Rx16 chip. From other sources, dual rank is shown as 2Rx8 and comes with some trade-offs, though it's usually favored for similar reasons.
He mentioned a 1rx16 model because he referenced denser 1rx8 memory with fewer RAM modules than the 1rx16, but the same storage size. If you consider it, 16GB in a 1rx8 setup contains roughly half the number of RAM chips compared to a 1rx16 unit since there are significantly fewer chips on the 1rx8 version.
Aw jaysus this is gonna be the new mostly inconsequential thing people obsess over isn't it
I believe the notation was swapped. 1rx16 is more compact and substitutes for two 1rx8 chips.
