I recently switched from my old ZOTAC 1060 to a RTX 2070 SUPER and noticed strong coil whining during games such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider or Minecraft when FPS is high. With the previous model, the sound wasn’t noticeable. I returned the card to the manufacturer, who sent me a replacement but the issue persisted. The noise sounds like my cat when you accidentally step on its tail. It seems the whine originates from the GPU side rather than the power supply unit. Could it be due to a low-quality motherboard or PSU delivering unstable current to the GPU? If so, upgrading to a better PSU or motherboard might help. I’m considering replacing my ASRock Z370 with an ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming for consistency in branding. However, if the problem lies elsewhere, I could tolerate the noise. Apart from the whine, my system still performs well. EDIT: I shared this on CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory since I suspect the motherboard might be the root cause.
If you check inside the case, the noise seems coming from the GPU area. Or could a faulty power supply be supplying incorrect current to the card and leading to coil whining? If that’s the case... Which PSU would work better—Corsair RM750x (750W) or CoolerMaster MWE Bronze 650W? Or should I consider the ASUS ROG-STRIX-650G (650W)? Many sites say a 650W PSU is sufficient, but they might not account for all your RGBs.
It could be due to weak power supply. The power levels are acceptable, but switching to another PSU might help. Also, avoid connecting multiple GPUs in series without proper spacing.
You're asking about the best power supply options for your current setup. If you don't have a spare PSU at home, you can consider Corsair RM750x or ROG-STRIX-650G. Since you're not planning SLI and might upgrade to a 3080 later, those models should work well.
