I played Half-Life 2: Update and wondered if I had to purchase the game for it. It seems to cover Half-Life: Lost-Coast as well. I'm looking for a comparison table showing the original titles alongside their remakes or iterations in the second column.

You're wondering why they're referencing the past, assuming you already purchased and played them. Steam usually indicates whether an original game is required for the sequel.

The update refers to the sequence: Half-life 2, then Half-life 2: Episode 1, followed by Half-life 2: Episode 2. The first is a complete game, while the others are shorter DLC-style additions. Lost Coast is an independent mission taken from roughly halfway through the original Half-life 2. It doesn't affect the main story, but you can include it near the Highway 17 chapter if you wish to follow the narrative flow.

Update needs the original game, so it makes sense if you've played the base version.

It's merely a mod for Half-Life 2. The episodes function as standalone games.

The term "half-life" describes the period needed for half of a radioactive substance's mass to transform into different forms. For example, starting with 1 kg of U-236, after one half-life you'll have 0.5 kg left, and another half-life afterward you'll have 0.25 kg, continuing indefinitely.
