Now that I have enough capacity and RAM to run XP smoothly on my LMC, it’s time to obtain a copy. I’m choosing the Home edition since the motherboard I received with my late P5K mother has a valid CD key still attached. A trustworthy source for downloading should be available. As the system is set up and only needs the operating system to finish, everything looks good. For those unfamiliar with the community tags, here are the specifications: Celeron 300A processor, up to a Pentium 3 at 1GHz (clock speeds adjustable), 1.5GB PC133 SDRAM (up to 140MHz), dual 20GB HDDs, one Seagate ATA IV drive, and one Maxtor 2x2.5" FDD (Linux isn’t recommended due to compatibility issues). Additional hardware includes a CD burner, DVD player, dual digital tuner, Wi-Fi card, expansion cards, and an ISA FDD card.

I chose not to switch to Linux because the FDD wouldn’t function well with a lot of troubleshooting, which didn’t yield any progress even after checking forums. Additionally, using Lubuntu left my brother’s laptop running at 150MB RAM usage, while it only consumed 89MB when idle. Driver compatibility was also better on XP.

I have numerous DOS titles I'd like to run, and all the ISA card drivers are stored on floppy disks. It will also make it easy to move everything to USB—though the motherboard came out in 1999, and USB 3.0 is only backward compatible with USB 2.0? That’s not worth it.
