Trouble overclocking i7 9700k
Bolide:
I wanted to share an update with those who responded and anyone facing similar problems. In short, none of the overclocking articles I’ve read provided deep explanations about AVX or AVX offsets. AVX is a technology that certain tasks in your computer can benefit from, but it demands more CPU power and higher voltage for stable performance.
I adjusted the AVX offset to 1, which reduced my core ratio and consequently lowered my clock speed for AVX workloads while also decreasing the voltage needed. This allowed me to run at a 5GHz overclock at a much lower voltage while maintaining stability in stress tests.
Thanks everyone, and I hope this helps someone. For more details, there’s plenty of information on Google.
Hey that’s helpful. I understand AVX instructions are strong but very power-hungry, causing the processor to heat up during optimized calculations. That usually only occurs during stress testing an overclock. Most real-world applications don’t rely heavily on AVX instructions to match the intensity of those tests. So it makes sense to reduce your clock speed temporarily if it lets you safely run at a higher speed afterward.
