Trapped in BIOS setup. Asus laptop SSD swap issue.
I face difficulties swapping my SSD in the Asus G501 2015 (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-G501J...745.0.html). I’m attempting to swap the original 512GB SSD for a Samsung 980 1TB model, but after installing it on Windows 10 via USB without issues, it won’t boot normally—it only enters BIOS. I’ve tried this with other laptops too; HP and Razer both worked fine once. When I placed my old 512GB in another device, Windows launched successfully. After formatting the new SSD and copying the OS using AOMEI, it functioned properly on a server setup. The challenge arises when installing the new SSD in the Asus laptop, where it gets stuck in BIOS. When I used the old SSD in the original case, it booted correctly. Have others experienced similar issues during an SSD replacement and Windows installation in Asus laptops?
Is this the only drive in the notebook when you boot or install windows? Do both disks use the same connection interface SATA or M.2? Can you provide a picture of the "Boot" section in BIOS when the new drive is installed? And maybe also of the "SATA Configuration" in the "Advanced" section of the BIOS.
The available choices for "SATA Mode selection" involve verifying compatible drivers and hardware specifications. Some users report difficulties switching to newer NVMe SSDs on ASUS notebooks due to driver compatibility issues. It’s recommended to confirm your current BIOS version and ensure it supports the required protocol. Checking online forums or manufacturer sites can help clarify if the issue lies with the interface standard or the SSD itself. Consider exploring hardware listings that explicitly mention AHCI support for M.2 drives.
Thanks for your message. Based on what you shared, it seems the SSD is likely NVMe, though I’m not certain about the drivers from the ROG forum. It’s possible the system detects the new SSD correctly in BIOS but fails to boot Windows afterward. That usually happens if the motherboard isn’t fully recognizing the drive or if there are compatibility issues. If you need further details, just let me know.
You are right. I forgot that you installed Windows on it. .... some time later .... What I recognise when I thought again (and again, and again) about it is, that you have booted from the USB stick but not from the new disk. And as long as the disk is not recognised by the BIOS it will not work. Have you tried setting IDE mode and booting? I found this side comparing AHCI vs IDE: What’s the Difference Between AHCI and IDE (partitionwizard.com) One last thing I found is a firmware update tool for the Samsung 980 but not a driver. Manual: Firmware_Update_Utility_UserManual.pdf (samsung.com) Firmware source: Samsung Magician & SSD Tools & Software Update | Samsung Semiconductor Global I found no description for the firmware update for what issue it solves. I would give it a try. When you boot from the windows installation media USB does it list the disk in the install menu? I'm running out of ideas how to make the BIOS recognise the disk.
I've attempted the IDE mode, but it failed to start. Booting from USB shows the disk is present. Could this be related to the Master Boot Record? Would it be worthwhile to attempt a repair at https://pureinfotech.com/repair-master-b...?format=10? I also updated the firmware on the new SSD, yet no improvement was observed. Now I plan to install an older Windows version.
It fails to install even on a new SSD, working fine on an Asus laptop but failing afterward, forcing it to jump to BIOS.
