Transition to Z790 version from Z690 model
Hello, you're considering moving from Z690 to Z790 mainly for faster RAM speeds. But are those speeds actually different due to layout changes, or is it just that the 13th gen IMC offers better performance? Thanks for your question. If the 13900K performs better with the Z790's IMC and your current Z690 setup can handle even higher speeds, you probably don't need an upgrade. I appreciate your interest in overclocking and benchmarking!
It was mentioned in another discussion that officially supported speeds should match the JEDEC standard when they were created. I’d treat OC performance separately from that, yet I wouldn’t exclude future enhancements for IMC. It seems the method used for the 13th generation is much better than the 12th, so it’s not just a simple update. If this means quicker RAM OC, I’m unsure about it.
It might actually be a different RAM type. The 690 supports DDR4 while the 790 likely doesn’t. DDR5 offers significantly higher speeds and a broader bandwidth, which is why IGPs prefer it.
