Hello everyone, I'm trying to upgrade from my old 7700k to the latest 5000 series. I've been out of the world of CPUs and motherboards for a while and am unsure about the right chipset and processor for me. I usually use an ASUS fan, but recently noticed that Gigabyte Aorus boards are quite popular. For the CPU, I was considering a 5700x, but it seems it might not be available. Since this is mainly for gaming, I'm okay with spending a bit more if it's not too overpowered.

Is there a need to upgrade? A 7700k remains suitable for gaming.

Oh, I didn't mention I'm getting a 3080.

Buildzoid excels in evaluating mobs more effectively than I do.

It's still okay. Your PSU might be close but upgrading it to the 7700k would make you win, especially if this is just a gaming setup. You can wait until the first DDR5 CPUs are released before switching to a new motherboard.

Yeah? I just read that the 7700k is a bit of a bottleneck now. Got it OC'd to 4.9ghz. PSU should be an 850w, can't quite remember. I have been thinking of waiting for DDR5 but wasn't sure when it would be available.

5700X might come out early next year. Currently, for an 8-core setup you’d need 5800X or 5600X with 6 cores. For a 7700k it offers a smooth experience, though upgrading will boost performance at higher resolutions like 1080p or 1440p. Stick to B550 motherboards unless you find a good deal or want features missing from the B550. The main change between B550 and X570 is the chipset—B550 supports PIE4.0, while X570 also supports PCIe4.0, and some boards have all slots for 4.0 which are pricier.

4.9ghz on a 7700k sounds really good. It's a solid setup if you're using the OC, though it might not reach the best performance with a 3080—it won't cut it for something like 3080. You'll still achieve more than playable speeds (like 100fps+) and the full potential at 1080p won't be there, but you won't be limited by a 3080 either. This will mostly be a GPU-heavy situation. I'd suggest waiting on the next platform CPU instead of rushing into the end of the year.

Gigabyte Aorus boards are mainly compatible with Z390 chipsets. On B550 and X570 models, they don’t offer alternatives beyond what other brands provide at this time. The 7700K works well for esports titles, though demanding games will hurt its performance. DDR5 won’t reach the consumer market in these two years; it might appear in the third. Keep in mind that the latest server CPUs from Intel and AMD (Zen 3) still use DDR4, so users get memory up to two years after servers.

I'm planning to wait a while before checking the results. My setup is a 3440x1440p monitor running at 100hz, so I want to get the most out of it. I'll stick with the B550 since it seems to offer the features I need. Maybe I'll consider the B650 if it becomes available. It's currently 750w, which Nvidia says should suffice. I don't want to jump to an 850w upgrade—just about a $10-$20 difference would be enough. Since I mostly play AAA games, I'm eager to see what comes next.
