Hello, I own a laptop that had Windows 7 installed a few years back, and I upgraded to Windows 10 for free. I recently purchased a new desktop PC, and I’m wondering if I can transfer Windows to it. Do I still have access to the Windows 7 disk?

Log in to your Microsoft account on your laptop and link it to the product. On your new computer, enter your Microsoft login and activate the software there. If that fails, use your Windows 7 activation code.

According to the licensing terms, you are not allowed to move your OEM Windows license between devices. Only a retail license is permitted. You must buy a fresh Windows 10 license for your new setup.

Consider using this approach when your PC arrives. The keyboard layout on your PC may vary from the one on the Windows 7 drive you received with the laptop. Which one should you use? If those methods don’t work, you can purchase affordable, legitimate keys from Microsoft.

The Windows 7 key isn't compatible with other motherboards and is only valid for OEM devices. We can't confirm if it will work on a new PC just by logging in with an MS account. There aren't any affordable or trustworthy sources available. The Microsoft store is one option, but also consider authorized sellers near the MSRP. Any item priced under $100 is likely from the grey market.

Activators also helped, but it remains unlawful—it's just been triggered.

I bought this key, and I don’t notice any issues. I think I can move it to my new computer.

You purchased this key and confirmed it’s valid only for your laptop—this is how OEM deals function. Buying a cheaper Windows version means you can’t transfer it to another machine. This isn’t an OEM product you bought separately for a desktop; it behaves differently and remains compatible even after changing the motherboard. With laptops, you’re not the creator of the device, so the manufacturer installs the OEM and ties it to your laptop. I’m not suggesting anything is wrong here; I’m just noting how pleased you are that an illegal workaround exists. For me, this isn’t different from someone who enjoys using unauthorized tools. The software remains activated and functions properly, though it violates Microsoft’s rules.

This feature exists to allow users to take action while also providing a way to connect their Microsoft account for verification purposes.
