Transfer the operating system to a fresh partition.
There’s no built-in method to relocate only the OS to a new partition while keeping other data intact. You’d need to use disk management tools or a recovery software to carefully transfer the operating system to a separate partition without affecting the rest of your files.
But if the partitions are next to each other you could potentially transfer unused space from one partition to another using diskmanager. This setup needs partitions set up in a certain order from the start. There are many partition managers that can move space between Windows partitions safely and easily. Most, however, are no longer available. EaseUS remains free and I’ve used it on numerous virtual machines and servers to solve this issue. Dell 2008 Servers originally included 60GB default C partitions, but had a problematic boot partition between the main data partition and the C: drive, which made fixing the problem impossible with diskmanager alone. This situation caused a lot of work for MSPs who had to deal with bloated profiles, missing service packs, and eventually had to replace Dell employees. I managed to significantly improve my license by heavily modifying it.
Yes, you can relocate non-OS files to a backup site and then reinstall Windows using the correct partitions.
