I'm trying to reduce costs by finding the simplest method to move Windows 10 onto my new PC. I have a license key from a previous Windows 7 upgrade, but I'm unsure if that impacts the process. This should be my last challenge before finishing my first installation. Any suggestions for a fast and straightforward solution would be appreciated! TIA

Normally shouldn't be able to transfer it, but sometimes you can still set up the same Windows 10 version without activation. After installation, insert the Windows 7 key. If it functions correctly, you're good. If not, contact Microsoft for assistance—they might provide a different key or advise purchasing a new license and trying again. Make sure the account is local and avoid using Outlook Email just in case it manages licenses for your PCs.

You possess a Windows 8.1 activation key, but its relevance isn't clear.

You could visit Microsoft’s website, find the Windows 10 64-bit version, and save the file onto a USB flash drive. Since you’re just starting out, I’ll make sure the steps are clear and simple.

Set up Windows 8.1 on the new machine, then enter the activation code you possess. Utilize the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool to upgrade it to Windows 10. Windows 8.1 offers a free transition to Windows 10. Confirm the activation is on the new device, not the previous one.

Your previous setup used CD/ROM, but your new one doesn’t. That might mean you should get Windows 8.1 on a USB stick instead. Just let me know!

Connect your existing storage to the new machine and start up. To confirm activation, connect your local account to a Microsoft account prior to linking the drive. If issues arise, use the troubleshooting option to resolve activation problems.
