Transfer of OS Files
Transfer of OS Files
You can transfer the OS from your laptop to the new Dell desktop. The XP SP 3 9i should work on the desktop version.
You can do this, but Vista is really outdated and unstable. Try using the control panel, choose system maintenance, then backup and restore. In the left section, select create system image, save it to an external drive. When prompted, make a system repair disc. Boot from the external drive with your repair disk, and choose the image. Vista will then install on your hard drive. This helps prevent crashes when transferring old OS to another machine.
The plan is to limit Vista usage, but I can assist with that. Let me know how you'd like to proceed!
Open the control panel, choose system and maintenance, then select backup and restore. In the left section, click create system image. Store the image on an external hard drive. When prompted, generate a system repair disc. Access the desktop, insert the repair disk, boot from it using your external drive, and choose your image. The process will then install Vista on your HDD. I did this to ensure Vista runs smoothly even when transferring the old OS to another machine.
