Hey everyone, I'm assembling a new PC and planning to use the old hard drive. In my previous setup there was just one hard drive, but this new system runs Windows 8. If I transfer the old drive into the new one, will Windows 8 still be running there? That way I won't need to purchase a new operating system.

Windows 8 is stored on the hard drive. You likely won’t need to reinstall it, though you may need to reach out to Microsoft to move the activation key because it’s linked to your motherboard. This should work fine as long as you’re using the same board.

Avoid purchasing Windows 8 once more. When prompted for the key during the HDD transfer, simply re-enter the CD key. If the system reports an invalid key, contact the automated Windows support line for reactivation assistance.

You can check your PC for a saved installation file or registry entries related to the Windows 8 setup. Look in the system folder or use the search function to see if any installation data remains after removing the product key.

Was das Gerät vorgefertigt? Wenn ja, sollte auf der Verpackung ein Produktcode vorhanden sein. Wenn nicht, könnte es möglich sein, den Schlüssel im Betriebssystem zu suchen – vielleicht hilft eine Online-Suche dazu.

I took the PC from a store called CentreCom. The box has a label with my product key—something like xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx. Since it was prebuilt, does that mean it’s an OEM copy? That would mean I can’t use it at all.
