My friend made a bootable USB with Windows 7 for me when it was brand new. I transferred some files onto it. Will this affect the startup process? Since I can't use a CD because my PC doesn’t have one, should I consider getting a new copy?

I verified using MoboliveCD to see if USB was bootable. Everything proceeded smoothly, but the system became stuck at "Booting from Hard Disk." A small installation window appeared as expected.
