Once I start it, I just have to provide my email and link my account to my new computer.

If you possess a license that permits use across several computers, yes, you can activate it with a Microsoft account linked to a key. When moving your key from one purchased machine to another, especially if you're attempting a drive clone, this approach likely won't succeed. Keys—unless they're specifically multi-use—are tied to the PC's motherboard, so even after cloning and relocating, deactivation is probable. OEM keys are restricted to a single device.

I switched to Windows 10 from version 7, which means it's not an original equipment manufacturer.

you might attempt the process by creating a bootable USB from an older machine, turning it off, disconnecting the hard drive, connecting the SSD, installing Windows while connected, and then launching it—this usually works automatically once online, without needing any manual steps. If Windows 7 is pre-installed like a standard product rather than purchased separately, success isn't guaranteed; most reports suggest it won't work. Personally, it doesn't really matter much since activating Windows 10 mainly removes the watermark and unlocks certain options. My desktop has run an unactivated version of 10 for nearly a year (installed in September) and still functions perfectly. Windows 10 behaves differently from older versions—it won't lock you out after a period of inactivity.

It seems your computer transitioned through several operating systems, and you're hoping everything is working properly.

If it's a Samsung device, you can utilize their data migration tool. Otherwise, searching for a YouTube tutorial would be the best approach, though some aren't reliable and might damage your files or erase your storage.
