Looking for a screen recorder that captures audio directly from macOS without using the microphone? You're looking for a tool that records system sounds and video together, ensuring only what you speak is captured. The best option would be a dedicated screen recording software with built-in audio capture, such as OBS Studio or Camtasia, which can stream audio through their interface while recording your screen.

For pre-Catalina systems or when using the Screenshot toolbar, QuickTime is available. It's integrated into the operating system. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT208721

I'm using Monterey and QuickTime doesn't capture system sound, only via microphone. The screenshot toolbar appears when you start a new recording in QuickTime, which is similar. I'm not sure what you mean—I'm on Monterey, so it might be different. Could you confirm if QuickTime can record system audio?

MacOS lacks a native Stereo Mix feature, which is frustrating. It's recommended to use OBS as suggested by Wizardly. You can access audio via the Screenshot Toolbar by installing a plugin that turns it into a recording device and adding it to your screen capture settings. https://blogs.reed.edu/ed-tech/recording...ith-audio/

Great choice! Loopback audio works well for this setup. OBS can be tricky with quality settings, so sticking to lossless recording is a solid plan. QuickTime with loopback also supports lossless audio recording. Both options should preserve your original quality without compression.

It will capture the same quality as your display unless you choose a specific portion of the screen. The exact level of compression remains uncertain.

I captured the file using quick time and it doesn’t stand out much. Will the version saved with that audio format also be lossless? Since OBS maximum is 320kbps and I’m unsure of the source audio’s bitrate, it could be higher. I’d like to avoid lowering it or losing quality, so does using the loopback extension produce lossless output without compression? Or at least I understand what you’re asking.

Yes, loopback does introduce some noise after about 20 minutes of use. This means your recordings might have unwanted artifacts once that time is reached, which could affect the quality of what you capture. If you need longer sessions, you may want to consider alternatives or check if the device supports extended recording without this issue.
