Top remote work tools for file sharing and workflow management.
I’m just starting out with networking and have some confusion about remote file sharing. I think the right term might be different, which is why I’m getting mixed advice from others. Here’s what I need: 1. A local hardwired storage drive with backup in the cloud and on separate disks (I already have this setup). 2. My remote team in Texas and California should access these files just like they do in the office without needing a personal device. 3. I want to prevent accidental overwriting of files by multiple people. I’m open to using a paid service since I’m not familiar with this topic. Thanks for your support!
Google Drive offers this functionality. It integrates with Windows Explorer and includes version control to prevent simultaneous edits by multiple users.
What kind of files are you dealing with? If they’re MS office documents, consider using M365 for shared storage so multiple users can work together simultaneously. A cloud option would be ideal—often quicker, more secure, and simpler to manage. You could also try Nextcloud for a self-hosted solution or use SMB shares via a VPN, though performance tends to be lower.
Thanks for your kind words! I’m not familiar with setting up those features, but I can offer some guidance based on my training. Since you work with 3D BIM software, let me know if you’d like tips on integrating cloud storage or collaboration tools. You’re welcome!
https://support.google.com/a/users/answer/7212025?hl=en there is also a link for getting started at the bottom. It is a paid service, I think $20/mo/user is the going rate for me. There are a couple tiers, so depends on what you need.
I talked to the representative at Drive, but the feature I need isn't available directly. A workaround involves downloading Drive in both locations. When user A uses File 001, they must share it with users B-Z. Once finished, they can reshare with everyone. This method is functional for now since we have a small team and can manage access through folder structures containing the files needed. The drawback is that if someone forgets, we revert to the original situation.
