Top portable gaming set for mobile use.
I'm eager to hear your thoughts on this. I'm trying to understand more about handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck. While I don't play a lot of games myself, I enjoy titles such as Sims, Minecraft, Halo, Dreamlight Valley, and Palia. My Switch is my favorite, and I also like AmongUs for multiplayer experiences. Based on what I've found, the Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB seems to be a top choice. I'm considering buying it but want to make sure it's worth the investment—around £600 feels significant. I'm not looking for something overly expensive, but I also don't want to waste money on something that doesn't meet my needs. I'd appreciate your advice on what to look for and where to shop. Thanks!
For casual scenarios like yours, the switch remains a solid choice. Unless there are titles I can’t play directly (remember some Switch games are only available online), I’d stick with it until more info arrives about the Switch 2 and its upcoming releases. Regarding the Steam Deck, the 1TB OLED model seems excessive unless you plan to use it as your main gaming setup. A 512GB or older LCD version might be more practical, offering similar performance at a lower cost, though with different display specs and storage capacity. Once the bridge is open, iFixit provides helpful instructions for quickly swapping out drives for better performance.
The main issue with most handhelds is they run Windows. By default, Windows doesn't support joysticks, so you need third-party tools to make it work. Steam OS was built for controllers. I think most games run fine on the Steam deck. The only drawbacks of Linux are some anti-cheat programs don’t function properly, which can affect compatibility. I own the original Steam Deck and consider it a good buy. Regarding storage, the deck includes an SD card slot, allowing easy expansion if you can't afford the built-in space.
