Not just the performance, it really failed—constant crashes and freezes made it unusable. I won’t use Ubuntu again.

Some games aren't available on Linux at all. Others might require Wine, while a few have native Linux support. You'll need to test each one individually. If you prefer gaming, Windows is usually the safest option. Linux has subsystems for Windows and many distros from the Windows Store, but it depends on your setup. I think it's best to stick with the OS you're most comfortable using. If you want to learn Linux but still play games, consider dual booting, a virtual machine, or using a Linux distribution.

I have Linux set up in a Windows terminal, but it doesn’t always run smoothly—maybe I should step away from gaming. I’m considering installing Linux on my laptop while still using my gaming PC.

You can always run two operating systems side by side, as Xaring recommended. I rely on Linux for most tasks—especially games—and use Windows for the rest. If you need to run Python on Linux, a virtual machine is a great option without needing to restart everything.

Additionally, Solaris (OpenIndiana) and BSD (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, etc.) also include Python support.
