For a 775/771 processor, pushing performance for modern games won't be effective—expect stability problems even with long play sessions without overclocking. Overclocking doesn’t always improve real-world performance, especially in situations like gaming where hardware bottlenecks exist (such as slow SATA2, DDR2, or PCIe 2.0). Only a few aspects can benefit from OC, and the gains are limited. For experimentation, a good quality motherboard might suffice. High-end options include Asus P5Q-E, P5Q Premium, P5Q Deluxe, and similar models from Gigabyte or Gigabyte GA series. You might also find alternatives like Asus P5K or MSI P35 NEO2-FIR. The Gigabyte boards are solid choices, especially those with a P45 chipset. You might also consider the X48, which has worked well with devices like the REX. There are variations using the same chipsets that perform similarly, so I’ll need to update my list accordingly. While P35 is mentioned (which is reasonable), I’d recommend opting for a P45 or X48 board if possible, depending on what you plan to install. P35 boards are decent but fall short compared to P45 and even an X48 in FSB speed. For single or dual core chips (such as E-8500 Wolfdale), the X48 is ideal, while the P45 can handle them too. With quad core chips like the Q9550, the P45 remains the clear winner because X48 boards aren’t suited for them.
P45 continued where X48 left off, using a DDR2 board that works well with Wolfdales. Running at 600fsb could have been faster, but my performance hit 600. The same board has trouble with Yorkfields above 475fsb. P45 did decently with them, and 500fsb+ was manageable. It’s roughly as smooth on Wolfdale as it is on X48. P35 also had a solid chipset, though not quite as strong.
