Hey, I know this question pops up a lot, but what’s the top gaming CPU you can afford right now? Both Intel and AMD have great options, with no price cap. Let me know!

14900K seems to boost raw performance, but it struggles with heat dissipation and feels like a limited setup. You’d really want 7950X3D instead, though there are options where the 7800X3D matches well. I know this isn’t the exact solution you were looking for.

For top gaming speed, the 7800X3D offers the quickest performance.

It has been this way for a while now. Google could have managed it much simpler and shown they could too.

Latest reviews from TechSpot/Hardware Unboxed highlight the 14900K's CPU performance for gaming. At 1080p with an RTX 4090, the 7800X3D consistently leads, outperforming the 14900K by about 7.5%.

If you handle the CCD setup yourself, the 7800x3d shines. @Agall shared several helpful discussions about it. Generally speaking, the 7800x3d offers the highest frame rate among standard gaming CPUs.

This weekend I turned off CCD1 to investigate some oddities in Warframe. It relies on peer-to-peer hosting, which usually runs on my end, and the enemy density tends to consume most of the CPU. I noticed a drop in frame rate while CCD1 usage seemed minimal. I couldn’t reproduce the problem after switching it off, even though I used Processor Affinity settings previously. It’s possible this was an isolated issue across two missions, but it might have changed. The prevailing idea is that the latest Dagath update introduced DX12 multithreading tweaks that the 7950x3D struggles with, possibly because CCD0 isn’t being pushed to its limits while CCD1 is active. It seems like forcing more CCD0 and less CCD1 creates latency when crossing the fabric. Although the 7950x3D in an 8+0 model technically offers a 200MHz increase, it rarely reaches that speed—especially at lower clock speeds—and it doesn’t justify the extra ~$300. You won’t notice the higher boost when performance is limited to 2 cores or 4 threads, so it likely stems from thermal constraints of the chip, which explains why the 7800x3D caps at around 5.05GHz (possibly due to better core utilization). The 7900x3D reaches up to 5.25GHz, reflecting a stronger per-core performance, though that’s rarely seen in practice.

The 14900K continues to outperform the 7800X3D in certain titles, especially in games like Starfield where it edges out by a noticeable amount. However, when looking at averages across multiple games, the 7800X3D tends to win overall. My figures are based on a 4090 at 1080p, which isn't typical for that model. At 1440p the gap narrows somewhat, and at 4K the performance difference is essentially negligible. So unless cost matters, choosing the 14900K is perfectly reasonable—it's not overly slow.
