I’m planning to start a YouTube channel soon and want to know the best tools for software use. I usually rely on XSplit for streaming games, which works well for me. I’m seeking something more detailed. I’ve tried Roxio before—it functions okay but feels quite basic and not very polished. Do you have any recommendations for free or inexpensive options that could help me get started? Any links would be great.

I usually rely on FRAPS to capture my screen, though the file sizes tend to become very large. Another option I’ve been trying is ShadowPlay for desktop recording. Sadly, these are the only tools I’m familiar with.

Recording with OBS is a great free option, while DXtory stands out as a top-paid choice.

I prefer not to use screen recordings. I’d like the option to capture video directly from a webcam or to edit any files taken with my DSLR camera.

Sure, I tried to make it clearer. I’m glad with the screen recording, but I need the ability to capture from a webcam as well, plus edit both audio and video using my DSLR.

OBS supports recording any video source linked to your PC that can stream its audio and video. Similar to capture cards or webcams, it works for desktops, games, etc. For my perspective, DXtory can achieve the same with proper video settings. Because OBS is free, it offers an open-source alternative to XSplit. You could use it to capture your camera, possibly even more effectively than OBS since XSplit Pro allows saving files separately.

Absolutely correct, though xsplit lacks any post-production features, and without a detailed build log I’ll need to handle a lot of editing tasks myself.
