Hello, your GPU is quite outdated, but you're trying to keep it in sync with your CPU. The PC itself is old, but you upgraded the GPU a couple of years ago from a GTX 750 Ti. Your current setup includes an i5-4590 CPU, 2x DDR3 2GB and 4GB RAM, B85-plus motherboard. You're considering a Ryzen 5 2600, but that would require changing the RAM and motherboard. Are there other CPU options you could try without needing to replace RAM or the board? Or are there no alternatives given the age of your system? Thanks, Bear.

4790/4790k seems to be the optimal option for a CPU upgrade, assuming you're skipping the motherboard and RAM.

If you have the means, I highly suggest upgrading to a new platform. Investing in outdated equipment is essentially a waste of resources.

I think spending 100-200$ to upgrade something here for a quite dramatic increase in performance is worth it currently, instead of spending 1000$+ for something new

Absolutely, it's possible to find compatible components for another system.

So, experts suggest choosing an i7 4770/4790 or opting for a completely new setup. Yet, there’s something overlooked: E3 Xeon CPUs work well on older systems. Make sure your BIOS is updated, but note that your motherboard supports Xeon e3 V3 CPUs: https://www.asus.com/supportonly/b85-plus/helpdesk_cpu/. The Xeon e3 1230v3 and higher offer quad cores with hyperthreading. Based on current eBay prices, the Xeon e3 1270v3 for $28 fits well but rates fluctuate. It runs at 3.5 GHz base and 3.9 GHz turbo, though you’ll need an integrated GPU—this model lacks one, so consider alternatives. The 1245v3 costs the same $28 but has slower 3.5 GHz and 3.9 GHz clocks. An i7 4770 costs about $40, saving roughly $10 compared to a similar upgrade. Also, aim for at least 16 GB of RAM since DDR3 prices are low. You could add two more 4 GB DDR3 1333 sticks (avoid ECC) for around $10 on eBay, replacing your two 2 GB units. Overall, you’d spend around $40 to refresh your system.
