Hi, I understand your situation. With an MSI 980 Ti GPU and an older Intel i5-4690K running at 3.50GHz, you're looking for a solid CPU and motherboard setup. The H97 GAMING 3 is still functional but consider pairing it with a mid-range CPU like an Intel i5 or i7. For the motherboard, a reliable option would be the ASUS PRIME Z690 or MSI MEG, which support modern CPUs and offer good performance. This should give you a stable build without breaking the bank.

Budget and country details are needed. Also clarify which workloads or games are involved. If this setup were compatible with an ASRock or ASUS board featuring a socketed BIOS, it would make sense to invest in a Ch341A BIOS programmer and crossflash H97 to Z97, as they function similarly. Differences in processing methods mean it might not be worthwhile unless you're comfortable swapping BIOS checksums to enable crossflashing.

The focus should be on the budget first—it’s actually more crucial than the GPU.

Youll need to buy ddr4 if you wanna upgrade, total budget? Also ignore what i said above msi has an spi header marked jspi1 which has the bios chip located right next to it and the header is on the edge of the board beside the chipset heatsink. You just gotta buy some dupont male to female jumper cables. If you had a gigabyte then youd be completely screwed either stuck to a trash bios test clip that works 1/4 of the time or desoldering. So if it turns out the budget isnt enough for a better cpu + mobo + ram then heres your fallback Edit : forgot to put the pinout link Heres the pinout

The strategy is to allocate £300 to resolve the GPU performance issue and bring it back to optimal levels. The i5 processor should handle tasks that the 980Ti struggles with.

It seems the older i5 is causing a slowdown now, which is why I reached out. I received a DDR4 3200 with 16 GB RAM as a gift.

Are you sure? Modern gaming no longer needs quadcores with hyperthreading.

Are you considering a 980Ti? If your system uses DDR4, you’ll likely need to choose Adler Lake. The 5800X3D model exceeds your £300 budget. Here’s the PCPartPicker list: CPU – Intel Core i5-12400F 2.5 GHz (£185.99 @ Technextday); Motherboard – Gigabyte B660M DS3H DDR4 Micro ATX LGA1700 (£114.86 @ Technextday). Total comes to £300.85, including shipping and taxes. Prices reflect current offers. Created by PCPartPicker on 2022-10-29.

Based on certain bottleneck tools, my 6600k and 1050 Ti seem to work well together as a balanced setup. I have a slightly faster CPU while he has a much stronger GPU, which should still perform nicely at 1080p. It’s considered a top-tier card for its era.
