Top choice for the most lightweight antivirus software.
It can be paid or free depending on what I need. There are many mixed feelings about the lightest antivirus available, so I aim for a clear decision. I’m searching for a fast and slim antivirus because my system isn’t great, and every bit of RAM would help. I’m familiar with computers well and don’t get easily infected, so I don’t need heavy protection for myself, my dog, or my family. Thank you for your assistance.
Most AVs consume a lot of resources during active scans. MS Security Essentials uses relatively little memory, and AVG is also not great, but it has become more demanding over time. Some users are running AVG on older systems with just one core and 512MB of RAM, and it handles idle periods without much trouble.
McAfee stands out as one of the top antivirus solutions available. (Don’t ever get caught with McAfee) For genuine protection, Kaspersky antivirus impressed me with its performance and minimal resource use. I haven’t tried it, but I’m currently using Norton 360 without any problems.
Lightest in terms of resource consumption? I haven’t tried many of the newer options, but I’ve been using ESET for several years. According to Wikipedia, it heavily relies on assembly language in its code, which lowers system needs and saves disk space. www.eset.com

I favor Microsoft security essentials, though I believe it's not the best. It hasn't turned up anything useful, or else I'm just very fortunate.
