I assembled my machine several years back using an i5 8600k, and now I'm realizing it's beginning to limit performance while playing a bit more. I haven't really paid much attention to CPU specs or hardware lately since I'm just considering an upgrade. I'm aiming for a system that maintains smooth gameplay at 1440p with around 144 fps, and I'm prepared to invest enough for that. I'm open to both Intel and Ryzen options. Since I've only owned Intel before, I'm not sure which CPU would suit me best on the AMD side, nor do I have much insight into the 10th-12th generation Intel chips. To sum up, what's the most efficient choice for value? On Intel, I was thinking about recent i7 models and the i9 10850k seemed promising. For AMD, I need to research more about their offerings, but if you have any suggestions or starting points, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This likely means 12400F is the correct answer.

For a gaming CPU, the 12400F paired with a DDR4 board offers solid value at around $170. It delivers strong single-thread performance and the cost of a DDR4 B660 board is very low. You can also find rumors about boards that might let the 12400F reach speeds above 5GHz on the MSI B660M Mortar MAX if the release comes soon.
