You're looking for a motherboard that supports AM5, has PCIe 5.0, and fits your current setup with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and MSI B650-S Pro WiFi. It should also offer extra M.2 slots for more games and memory. A good option could be the ASUS ROG Strix Z690 PRO AM5, or the MSI MAG Z690 AM5, both compatible with PCIe 5.0 and offering multiple M.2 ports.

The performance gap between PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 will be negligible for these GPUs unless they use an 8GB card. For M.2 slots, consider adding an expansion card or a hard drive for backup storage.

You're asking about what's needed if they don't use an 8GB card, whether it's about performance upgrades or adding more storage via expansion cards. It sounds like you're considering options for speed and capacity. For PCIe cards with multiple M.2 slots, a good choice would be the M.2 2280 or 3200 series modules, which offer reliable performance and compatibility. Let me know if you'd like more details!

8GB cards often cause memory issues because they load too much data through the PCIe Bus, leading to delays or textures failing to load. For gaming, the amount of activity on the PCIe Bus isn’t enough to limit performance even with PCIe 4 support. On your board, you only have a PCIe 4 x 4 slot. An expansion card offering just four lanes won’t fit unless it includes a controller. You can connect a standard PCIe 4x4 slot to any M.2 card, but without the proper controller it won’t work.

The sound definitely matters, especially in 4K gaming. I’ll check online for options.

Also, just confirming—placing a 16GB PCIe 4 card in a Gen 3 slot would work for gaming now that it exceeds 8GB, right? Looking into this for a future project.

Performance can drop by 1 to 5% due to PCIe limitations. This impact is usually very subtle. In systems lacking Gen 4 slots, the effect becomes more noticeable.

It's clearly the top AM5 board available today for its price. Even at a discount, it's still priced around 350 if you manage to locate it in stock. I haven't found any sub-200 x870/e boards with multiple Gen5 M.2 slots that maintain a 4x PCIe speed without compromises.

Sure, I was checking that one, but to be honest, there are just too many different mobos these days. I gave up trying anyway, hehe.

Sure, that sounds like a smart move. Using your old PC with your new 7800 XT and swapping it for an i7 3930K would definitely boost performance without buying a whole new machine.
