Top choice board for Intel 7th generation processors
Recently I've been looking for motherboards on Amazon for an I7-7700 non-K, but found only unreliable Chinese sellers. Could you share your suggestions for motherboards that work well with a Kaby Lake i7 processor?
I suggest opting for a Z270 board rather than a H270, particularly one with two genuine x16 ports (these operate in x8/x8 mode when both are used). Prices for used Z270 boards are comparable to those of Z270 models. When you secure the appropriate Z270 board and setup, you’ll enjoy 10-gigabit USB and the capability to support two PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 drives at optimal performance—using one slot for each drive.
H270 systems generally offer similar costs to Z270 boards on the secondary market. KabyLake boards with dual M.2 slots can only run a single NVMe drive at full speed because of DMI 3.0 chipset restrictions. Unfortunately, most KabyLake models with two M.2 ports cannot handle two NVMe drives simultaneously; they’re limited to one at top speed. Although technically both slots can accommodate four NVMe drives, the chipset prevents true parallel operation.
Add-on cards with built-in bifurcation exist, but they usually only allow two drives at half speed for budget options or enable two full-speed drives for a premium price—often doubling the board’s cost. If you use both on-board M.2 slots, both NVMe drives tend to run at half speed automatically, even if unused.
While Thunderbolt 3 is impressive, using add-on cards can be as expensive as purchasing the board itself. Manufacturers usually recommend installing the card in the PCIe 3.0 x4 slot shared with the on-board M.2, which caps performance at 16 gigabits. If you place the NVMe drive in one PCIe x16 slot and the add-on in another, you can achieve 32 gigabits—though this is still constrained by the interface.
Modern boards are increasingly equipped with USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 ports, making the search for cheap add-ons less appealing. In short: H270 boards match Z270 prices well. With a suitable Z270 setup, you gain dual x16 slots (functioning in either x16/x8 or x8/x8 modes) and full 10-gigabit USB. KabyLake models with two M.2 slots can only support one NVMe drive at top speed due to chipset constraints. For best results, consider used options.
