Hey! Planning to assemble a PC soon, haven’t purchased Windows yet, and I’m looking for some advice on the most affordable marketplace for buying Windows 11 Pro. Here are a few options that have come up, and I’d appreciate your thoughts. I won’t be skipping activation and definitely won’t pay the full price. Thanks in advance for your help!

Purchase an inexpensive key and simply keep it inactive. It’s significantly less expensive with very few limitations. None of these sources are official dealers, so it’s best to avoid them.

I personally wouldn't recommend them. Many of the sites selling "gray" market keys are really sketchy or even a scam. I would say leaving windows unactivated is better then spending your money on these keys. Most of the keys on these sites are either: - OEM keys bought in bulk from microsoft and resold (technically against Microsoft's policy) - Misused corporate license keys (MAK) It's possible that whoever is selling these keys purchased the keys from Microsoft by pretending to be a system integrator and buying OEM keys in bulk and reselling the keys individually instead of activating computers with them. Which is against Microsoft's system integrator policy. You might get a key that works. There's no guarantee it will continue working in the long term. Or if they tell you to use a "custom activation server", it is 100% a stolen/misused corporate license and you should not give them your money. Also, NEVER use install media provided by the "resellers". If the key they give you won't work with Microsoft's install media, it's a scam. The only way to get a guaranteed legit windows key is to get it directly from Micorsoft or an authorized reseller .

Amazon or Microsoft stores are likely the top options. Grey markets aren't wise—consider buying at your own risk.

Yep, but it's not against the law. I got one for 2 dollars on eBay a while back and it performed perfectly. The issue comes up when you buy a new motherboard—it often fails because of OEM problems. I thought you could reach out to Microsoft and have it reactivated, but I didn’t try. Also, back then I worked in a repair shop where the owner had those official licenses on hand... (thousands of them). That’s why I believe you can contact Microsoft if needed, since that was our usual solution for any issues, usually related to the motherboard.
