I’m heading back to the province this Christmas. There’s no room for my computer at home, and I didn’t bring any extra gear like a monitor. I’m planning to borrow a friend’s machine, which will let his customers use it. My main concern is stopping downloads and changes to my PC. Do you know of any software that blocks these activities? I’ve heard of DeepFreeze, but I’m unsure if there’s a way to temporarily disable it for patching games and then restart everything. I’d prefer not to restart the PC repeatedly, so are there alternatives?

Deepfreeze seems to be the safest option, but why do we worry so much about restarting your PC repeatedly? Many computers shut down a few times a day without any issues, and turning them off doesn’t cause harm.

I believe I damaged my old computer while repeatedly restarting it. Does this affect an SSD?

Restarting a PC doesn't damage it. It's running and stopping multiple times daily, and at work it powers off each evening without affecting the SSDs. These devices last longer than expected, so leaving the PC on isn't as harmful as people think. Running it constantly keeps parts under stress, raising their temperatures slightly, but overall performance stays stable.

I'm using my laptop now and it's been running nonstop for 13 days. Thanks for the help!

Wow, really? That’s crazy, I’d never leave a laptop on. I’m the opposite—everything stays off unless it’s in use, so my laptops probably only turn on for a few hours each week. I’ve never had a computer or laptop fail.

Sure, I was fetching games I purchased during a recent Steam promotion.
