You're unfamiliar with Lara. Unless you've played the games, she hasn't been mentioned much. In The Last Revelation, she was portrayed as a child, with her father acting as her mentor before his passing and she having companions in every title. The latest releases seem to skip this history entirely by starting over the narrative.

Referring to what they have as a "story" takes the wordway beyond its usual meaning. Still, the fresh tomb raider titles offer a much richer and more compelling narrative, perfect for motivating you to tackle the next challenge. PS: uncharted keeps things entertaining but isn’t a true classic, let alone a subtle one.
