I need to update several components in my system. The motherboard is an Asus Z97 ROG Ranger, the CPU is a 4690k, and I plan to install Windows 8.1 64bit. Currently, Windows 7 runs on a Samsung 840 EVO 120GB drive; I can use Secure Erase to wipe it or back it up. Other parts include an 8GB G.Skill Sniper 1600Mhz, an MSI R9 270, a WD Blue HDD with games and programs, and an Antec 550 PSU. I’m unsure if using an external DVD drive for the OS installation is acceptable. Will the motherboard support it in BIOS? I have a standard SATA CD drive available, which should work. Any guidance would be helpful.

Insert the CD into the motherboard and keep it on the side of your case temporarily? Run the Windows installer to set up the drive?

The bios identifies the external usb cd drive, and I’ve done this several times. However, it’s better to install the OS from a usb drive—it’s much faster and more convenient.

To connect an OS via USB, you'll need to set up a bootable USB drive and install it on your system. This way, you can start your custom rig without needing a separate PC.

Use the official Microsoft download utility to obtain a Windows 7 ISO file from the internet. Ensure you possess the required license if needed. If uncertain, search for guidance online.
