Purchased a compact gaming laptop for my wife; she uses it infrequently, mostly once a week. Occasionally it won’t boot properly—either the screen stays blank or it shows a recovery message requiring a restart. It’s been running with minimal programs and regular updates. The device freezes when powered off most of the time, which is frustrating. I’m considering a factory reset but am open to advice on how to proceed or remove unnecessary software. Since I assemble my own PCs, I wonder if reformatting and installing Windows from scratch would work without Acer-specific tools. What are the potential risks?

I own an Acer Nitro and noticed it didn't include extra software. On laptops, it's important to have the maker's control center tools active unless you've confirmed they don't interfere with your needs. There are features tailored for each device that Windows can't replicate.

So I decided to perform a factory reset and see if that would fix everything. I was hoping it would remove any lingering issues.

The factory reset didn’t resolve the boot problem. It seems there might be a hardware issue or Windows is still reporting errors despite the reset. To assess your hard drive’s condition, you can use diagnostic tools like CHKDSK, CrystalDiskInfo, or third-party utilities such as Disk Management or MemTest86.

CrystalDiskInfo reports a 99% health status. The drive model is Kingston OM8PCP3512F-AB 512.1 GB. The issue appears as either a black screen with no Windows boot or it powers on and claims Windows has recovered from a major error (will attempt to capture the image next time). The laptop is typically used five times weekly, each session lasting about 30 minutes. This pattern seems to trigger the problem during cold starts in the morning. Online searches reveal comparable issues. Some attribute it to a BIOS update, others mention a corrupted partition. A few suggest a factory reset or system restore might help. Others report exhausting all options without resolution.

Post-reset BIOS version is 1.01. Updated to the newest 1.04. Observing changes tomorrow. Problems appear to increase even after the factory reset.
