I’m looking to boost my internet performance after buying a new modem. I’m currently using an Arris 8x4 unit that’s really slow, so I’m aiming for the top-tier option available. Most modems aren’t listed as approved by Charter Spectrum, but they’ll work if you install whatever you buy. I plan to upgrade soon to 400/20 and am now at 200/10. I considered the Arris SB6190 because it’s on the approved list, but reviews about poor latency with Intel Puma chips seem outdated. I’m trying to find a modem that supports 32x8 channels, at least 24x8, for smooth gaming and streaming across devices. What advice do others have?

The 32x8 Docsis 3.0 models aren't ideal. The top choice is the 32x8 Docsis 3.1 versions. It's tricky to confirm compatibility with Docsis 3.0 internet, but many sources point to the SB6183 or CM600 as reliable alternatives. There are also a few Docsis 3.1 modems available. If I were you, I'd look into testing a Docsis 3.1 unit to see if it fits your needs. Since Docsis 3.1 is expected to be the next step for cable providers.

I completely understand your concerns! The main issue is the lack of provisioning after setup, along with higher costs and unused features. I’m concerned about the extra expense and missing speed benefits. The SB6183 doesn’t fit because it’s 16x4, while the SB6190 is more affordable but still 32x8. My doubts began with the SB6190 being close to the 3.1 DOCSIS modem, yet it has similar limitations. I’m thinking about purchasing locally and testing it, worried that the SB8200 might not work as expected or that the SB6190 could have latency problems despite passing tests.

Don't rely on the SB6190 due to Puma6 problems. This conflicts with your other buying notes—I have the MB8600, which is excellent. It seems there are several cases where SB8200/MB8600 are used on Charter/TWC/Spectrum, suggesting they might have a DOCSIS setup.

I've been collecting this stuff a lot lately... it's really frustrating having to stick to what my ISP approves. They offer 940mbps internet but don't list that speed on their website. It makes me wonder if we're just going to have to test and see what works.

It's interesting you bring this up. From what I've noticed, the only modem officially certified by my ISP for 400mbps internet is likely the CM600 from Netgear. Research indicates a security vulnerability exists, but it lacks the Intel Puma chipset. I also found the MB8600, which makes sense why you should mention it—it's a bit of a surprise. There aren't many clear opinions online, so it's a bit uncertain. Should I go with the best available option I've seen—either the SB8200 or the MB8600—and contact them to test before deciding? It does sound like a bit of work, but I only have a few choices.

I support both options, but I’ll go with Motorola’s 3.1 DOCSIS for reliability. Arris SB8200 is a solid choice too.

I notice a stronger suggestion here. That’s likely what I’ll choose.
