It will be too weak for the i7 no matter what. If you're swapping the board later, it's better to switch platforms entirely.

It's a bit compact but should work fine.
3. Not recommended—avoid 9700K with H310 board. Don't purchase a 9700k since many have already pointed out there are superior options. These are the processors I’d think of in a comparable budget. Ryzen 5 3600 offers the best value, Ryzen 7 3700x is the top overall Intel i5, and the 10600k shines for gaming (just a bit). Also, selling your old 8400 will be simpler if you also have a functional motherboard for that CPU.
