Hey there, so we’re planning a big project at the lab for our calculations. We don’t need a GPU, just tons of RAM and a fast processor. Here’s what we have in mind:
Build: Housing – Corsair Obsidian 750D Full tower CPU – Ryzen Threadripper 3960X @ about 4.2GHz
Motherboard – Asus ROG Strix TRX40-E
RAM – 256GB Corsair Vengeance 3000MHz
Power Supply – Corsair 1000W RMX series
Cooling – MasterLiquid ML360R RGB for CPU + extra fans in the case
Thermal Paste – MX-4 Extreme
I’m a bit concerned about the CPU getting hot, especially if we slightly overclock it. Also, I’m not sure how much heat the huge amount of RAM will generate. Does this cause a lot of temperature rise on the CPU? We need to run calculations nonstop for several days under full load. Any advice would be super helpful! Thanks a ton.
Ram will generate a moderate amount of heat, even with limited volume. The warmth will be distributed across the modules. As long as airflow remains in the case above the RAM, everything should be okay. Particularly important for extended calculations—reconsider overclocking. At minimum, plan thorough testing to verify stability. You don’t want any issues after days of operation.
With your budget in mind, custom liquid cooling could be a great choice. Since you'll run it continuously without breaks, adding two radiators would likely improve heat dissipation and maintain better performance.

Since your threadripper lacks an integrated graphics card, you'll need an additional GPU.
