It's a strong all-purpose CPU, but since I'm moving up to the latest AM4 chips from a 3700X, I need more cores and better performance.

it’s safe to stick with the 5800x3d for a bit more longevity on the AM4 platform.
depending on budget and location i’d opt for the 7800xt over the 4060ti 16gb, which is its main rival in my view. the 4070 is essentially just an upsell to the 4070 ti, offering longer life if RT isn’t a priority. the 7900xt stands out in many aspects compared to the 4070ti!
the 7800xt comparison with the 4070ti is just cherry-picked BS trying to push the card at 500usd, which matches the price of the 4060ti. wait for reviews but keep an eye on it beating the 4060ti at the same cost!

Yes, wait for feedback before choosing the 7800XT. The FSR3 seems promising.

Currently it's either the 5800X3D or the 5900X; I just need to choose between gaming and general productivity.
I'll wait for the 7800XT reviews. I have enough time to consider and plan before any of the games I'm interested in release. I might try the CPU first.

the 5900x stands out as the superior CPU compared to the 5800x3d, especially in gaming scenarios where it performs better in less cache-intensive titles and production tasks.
Many will exaggerate about the 5800x3d, but it really shines in fewer cache-heavy games, making it a solid choice for most situations.
If you're looking for a balance between strong performance across the board and affordable production work, I usually suggest the 5900x.
I remember when they released the higher-end X3D CPUs; I was impressed by the 7950x3d, which had more cores for gaming and better cache handling in sensitive games.
But in the end, I chose the 7800x3d because it offered better value for gaming alone, despite being a lower-end option.

I chose the 3700X because it excels not just in gaming performance but also in quickly compressing and decompressing files, which was crucial for my Sims 3 play. It reduced loading times from 15 to just 5 minutes. While many other games load fast, Sims titles rely heavily on compressed files plus a lot of external content that needs unpacking. I think future similar games will follow this pattern.

Reviews of the 5800X3D highlighted speed and frame rate, but none mentioned sim games with heavy compression, suggesting a better fit might be the 5900X for those types of titles. Converting video files would also be faster with it. The 5950X is decent but costs about $200 more, which I’d rather avoid for other parts.

The 3700x is an excellent CPU. When I built my first PC four years ago, it was the one I used. Of course, I wasn’t very experienced with building PCs; I just watched some videos and many people suggested the 3700x. It’s now long gone, having sold after I moved to the 5600x. There were times when the 5900x was cheaper than the 5800x3d, making it the better choice at that point. The 5800x3d really outperforms the 5900x in some games—it’s almost a joke—but compared to the 13900k versus the 7800x3d, the 13900k is clearly the superior option. Overall, the 7800x3d is more affordable and efficient, offering great performance in most games, making it a smart choice. However, if you’re doing production work, try some games and don’t have the budget for the AM5 platform; a 5900x is still a solid overall pick, while the 5800x3d remains the top choice for gaming!

More colors don't always mean faster performance. In gaming, after about 6c/12t, improvements are mainly due to frequency and cache size, not core count. Not every game will behave the same, but keep in mind:
5800X3D = 189 FPS
5600X3D = 183 FPS
5900X = 156 FPS
For productivity apps, verify that the extra cores are being utilized and that the gaming benefits justify the tradeoff.
