It seems there might be some confusion about the timeline and capabilities of different CPU generations. The longevity of AM4 boards is impressive, covering a wide range of processors from earlier to newer models. For AM5, it appears the focus may shift toward supporting Zen 4, with potential for Zen 5 in 2024, which promises a completely new architecture. This suggests that while AM5 boards are likely to handle Zen 4 CPUs, they might not be ready for Zen 5 yet.
This situation makes me think AMD likely reaffirmed their commitment back in 2020 when they attempted to withdraw their platform support promises. The community had to remind them to honor the "through 2020" timeframe rather than extending it further. If AMD decides to align with Intel's two-generation strategy, our options are limited. My main concern is whether AMD will extend socket support for another five years, as this seems more realistic now. One of the main reasons long-term AM4 support faltered was the scarcity of quality boards in earlier models, such as the poor B350 and X370 designs with insufficient ROM chips. AMD's hesitation to back new CPUs on older AM4 boards suggests they may not extend support as long as before. It seems manufacturers hope for shorter lifespans too, so they can offer more mobos over time. They might also be more inclined to use higher-quality parts if they anticipate selling newer models regularly. The upcoming Zen 5 release in 2024 could align with a two-year support window for Zen 4 mobos. Much is guesswork, but it looks like AMD may not be as supportive this cycle, and Zen 4 devices might be limited to that generation only.
There's an element of truth to that, but on the other hand, partners like ASRock were actively pushing to enable support for 5000 series CPUs before AMD even officially allowed compatibility, by way of Beta BIOS releases, and these came out very soon in the product lifecycle of 5000 series. There seems to be a desire to have multi-generational support as a selling point, at the very least.
AM4's extended compatibility offers genuine benefits from AMD, and users clearly value it—giving up would be a mistake. Supporting Zen through Zen3 across four generations makes sense, whereas AM5 might not hold the same advantage.
