This upgrade is definitely worthwhile.
Hi, I’m using an R5 3600 CPU, RX 6800 GPU, a 3440x1440 ultra-wide display, and 32GB of 3200Hz RAM with a 16CL configuration. I mainly play racing games such as ACC, LMU, and AMS2. I’ve been thinking about upgrading my CPU to an R7 5800X3D—does that really make a noticeable difference? After checking various sources, I’m still unsure if the improvement will be significant. A 10% to 20% boost in FPS doesn’t seem substantial enough. Thanks for your insights and experiences! TIA
The findings indicate that ACC favors utilizing the cache during this upgrade.
You should first check if an upgrade is necessary. 3600 isn’t the slowest, and it’s still possible to get decent FPS even with a modest GPU. Your performance might drop in certain games, but it shouldn’t be a major issue. If you’re not seeing a decline, upgrading right now probably isn’t urgent.
tbh... no. thing is the 5800x3d is faster yes. but single core not really and half of the games rely on that. does the bigger cache help? yea, sure, you'll get slightly more responsiveness, but does that really matter in most games? not really. fun fact: i upgraded from a 3600 to 5800x3D... everything works as it should, most benchmarks are even better than in reviews... but then i did superposition benchmark and guess what? same exact system except new 5800x3D instead of 3600.. performance was slightly *worse*... lol (that said my 3600 was really thriving with PBO offset...) so in most applications, no its absolutely not worth it... like ok do you really need 10fps more and *slightly* better responsiveness? why...? but if yes, then do it (just doesn't really make monetary sense imho)
The only thing I want to mention is that in simulation games, especially racing or flight sims, extra cache really helps. It’s often overlooked how much impact a small percentage can have—like the 0.1% drops on my 3800X were much worse than on the 5800X3D. For models with a 6800 GPU, it’s worth considering an upgrade. If you’re not limited by CPU power, this won’t make much difference. Otherwise, going for a GPU boost is better. When playing at higher refresh rates, x3d definitely shines. In short, if you enjoy sim racing, you’ll notice smoother performance—though frame rates might not jump dramatically. I play several racing titles, and games like F1 23, Forza Motorsport, and Alien Harmony offer noticeable improvements, especially with the x3D version. Overall, it depends on your hardware and how you use the game.
I grew up with PCs when 60 fps was awesome and now we have 240 Hz and gamers want 150+ fps, so while personally I would not buy a new CPU unless it is making my new game a slideshow, I'm aware that some gamers will consider the improvement from the X3D significant (particularly in a few games that really love it, like ACC appears to), so eh, each to their own I guess.
Sure, but jumping from 240fps to 250fps doesn’t really add much in terms of performance. Once you hit around 10ms, things like GStreamer or similar tools can negate those improvements. So it seems like people often focus on small numbers while overlooking the real impact. In short, if the upgrade gives you a solid 50% or more improvement, it’s worth considering. Otherwise, it probably won’t make much difference, and ignoring placebo effects is actually smarter.
