Hey there! Let's talk about your setup and what you're experiencing. With an i5-11400F, 16GB RAM, and a RTX 3060 Ti, you're in a solid configuration for gaming. The fact that you're seeing frame rates between 80-120 FPS on AIMTRAIN servers suggests the game is indeed CPU-heavy. Since your GPU usage stays around 60% while the CPU hovers near 50-54%, it's likely the CPU is the bottleneck.
Your guess about the lack of hyperthreading making it run at 50% usage makes sense. Upgrading to an i5-11700F with 8 cores could definitely help, especially if you want to push closer to 144Hz. Many players find that a more powerful CPU brings noticeable improvements in frame rates and overall performance. Just make sure the new CPU matches your motherboard's requirements. Let me know what you think!
Play at 1440p without any issues. Do you have two RAM sticks? If yes, what speed are they and is XMP active?
it isn't improved at 1080p either; I tried it too. 80fps-100 cutting graphics, dropping to 1080p doesn’t help much sometimes—I experience a sudden drop to around 28fps for a few seconds without any clear reason. I’m trying to fix this. According to the CPU-Z memory is 2667MHz even though the BIOS suggests a higher speed. It’s running at 2x8GB in dual channel and all possible XMP settings are enabled. Also, it mentions CPU-Z SPD Ext XMP 2.0, so I assume that’s active.
You likely have a motherboard restricting RAM speed. The game should run on an SSD, not an HDD. It's surprising your CPU isn't causing the issue since a similar older CPU worked fine. Check if enabling maximum graphics settings helps. If not, it probably isn't the CPU. Have you noticed other games experiencing similar lag? If not, what games have you tried fixing?
i mostly play rust and experience no lag in other titles, though it's not always perfect. usually the game runs smoothly with its dedicated nvme 2tb ssd that performs well on crystal disk mark 1tb+ r/w. i tried gta5 as well, using ultra settings and disabling antialiasing—still got 80-140fps, but my cpu usage is much higher than the gpu. here are some screenshots of rust: https://ibb.co/ZgXcLrx https://ibb.co/D1nDJ4m it's strange that i only see around 70fps or 110fps, which doesn't seem like a big difference.
The CPU utilization shown in Windows Task Manager differs from actual CPU usage. On Intel CPUs with low base frequency and high turbo boost settings, the utilization figure can be 50% to 60% higher than the real usage. This information may be misleading. When you see these large numbers, check the Task Manager Details section for a more precise reading. With your 11400F model, have you adjusted the turbo power limits yet? The standard 65W limit might hinder peak performance. Set it to the maximum allowed in your BIOS or use ThrottleStop to achieve the same result. This avoids unnecessary power throttling. GTA V is quite CPU-intensive, and throttling power limits could be affecting your frame rate.
CPU speeds often reach around 4.16 GHz as shown in screenshots. The MBO on AsRock H570M Pro4 cooler handles up to 120W TDP, and during turbo mode it performs well. You might want to check for bottlenecks by testing if upgrading the CPU helps. It seems RUST could be a factor—your assumption about core usage makes sense given GTA’s high demand. If you’re using physical cores instead of hyperthreaded ones, that could explain lower utilization. Drivers might also play a role. You’re not alone in this confusion!
The information you see here relates to performance metrics, not actual usage. This figure doesn't reflect real-world consumption like it might on a CPU label. It's based on a higher clock speed that your processor isn't operating at. When playing games, check the Details section for more accurate data. Focus on maximizing turbo power limits rather than boosting boost time. If a game uses fewer than six cores, upgrading to an 8-core processor won't significantly improve performance. The 11700F shares the same default TDP of 65W.
He’s assisted me with handling power limits and it really improved my setup. I’m not sure if your system is as big as mine, but it’s worth giving it a shot.
thanks for the update, HWmonitor shows 30% while Task Manager displays 50%. it seems the CPU isn’t the main issue, but I’m still puzzled about what’s going on. i raised the power limits to 175w on PL1 and PL2 using Cinebench, which now tops out at 120w without any big performance boost. i lowered the game resolution to 1366x768, but cpu usage stays around 80fps at 26% and gpu usage is only 18%. it looks like something’s not right after upgrading the GTX 1060 recently. could the drivers be faulty?
