This unusual prototype 2950X
I came across this discussion on r/pcmasterrace and noticed it claims a 2700X performance rating. It mentions the processor has 16 cores and 32 threads, though Task Manager lists only 32 threads. The only Zen+ model with 16 cores is the Threadripper 2950X, but it lacks an AM4 socket. Its base clock appears unusually high at 4.12GHz according to Task Manager. HWinfo reports 16 true cores, and since it was built on 12nm, it’s a Zen+ chip. It seems this might be AMD’s experimental design to adapt the 2950X for an AM4 socket. Interestingly, it functions without a BIOS update. The owner claims to have purchased it secondhand from Romania.
I’d rather think the pictures are edited. There’s a chance the processor could lie about its make—it might say it’s another brand than it actually is. Back then, AMD wasn’t just limiting core count; they simply didn’t have room to fit 16 cores in that socket with Zen+ technology.
