Recently both my HDD and SSD stopped working, likely due to power issues. Initially, I had a Seagate HDD that failed after about 15 months. I assumed it was because of frequent power cuts and installed a new SSD which malfunctioned within a week. That week coincided with a power surge (possibly from a nearby transformer). My PSU (Coolermaster 700W) made a coil whine noise, which eventually became intermittent. I checked for a leaking capacitor but found everything normal. Using the ear-muff method, I noticed vibrations in the coils and even the large cylindrical part inside. After inspecting all parts, I replaced the HDD with another WD model, which worked well after a week. While monitoring the PSU noise, I heard a buzzing sound from behind the processor. Research suggested this was likely the VRM handling voltage conversion for the CPU. If it idles, it reduces voltage via vibration—possibly why it wasn’t audible inside. I tried stressing the CPU to force a stable voltage on the Vcore, which reduced the coil whine. This made the buzzing inaudible when the case was sealed. Sometimes the PSU itself buzzes, and the CPU fan also makes noise.
I experimented with two approaches:
- Disabling idle power management in Power Options (Win10) helped eliminate the buzz entirely. I placed my ear very close to the motherboard’s backside during a panel removal to confirm.
- In another attempt, I searched for BIOS settings and found idle state options. I enabled idle mode, then disabled CPU states in BIOS. Booting caused a higher-pitched whine that stopped briefly under load.
Despite these efforts, the PSU still occasionally buzzed, and the CPU fan noise remained.

VRM achieves smooth voltage control without using vibration. It works by feeding 12V into a light switch and rapidly toggling it on and off. A capacitor and inductor help filter the output to a lower level. To adjust voltage levels, it controls how much the switch is active versus inactive. Some minor coil noise is typical but can be bothersome. Standard returns rarely fix the problem. It’s better for manufacturers to address this issue directly instead of focusing on flashy RGB upgrades. Altering CPU power usage might impact transient loads, which is why this suggestion exists.

I overlooked mentioning my APC bx-1100/660w backup system. I noticed the USB LED indicators on my case connected to the PSU dim initially after turning on the ups, taking about 5-15 seconds...then brighten as expected. This issue began recently. When I turned off the C states and ran a test to check for coil whine, the PSU was making loud buzzing sounds, and I saw my headphones and mic jack appear disconnected. Closing the UI resolved it, but later I realized neither headphones nor the mic were properly connected. The VRM was also buzzing, which seems normal. The voltages are standard, staying within the ±5% range, which is acceptable. The headphone link seems questionable—usually this occurs due to damaged or loose connections with the audio header or headphones. Poor power stability often leads to lockups and screen glitches.
