I have a Ryzen 7 3700X on an ASUS B450 M-A CSM board. Earlier I bought four 4GB 3000MHz RipJaws cards, assuming a four-channel setup would boost gaming and video editing performance. Now I’m considering an upgrade but noticed the boards only support quad channels. Is that correct? The motherboards typically have four DIMMs, and the BIOS/Windows recognize a 16GB configuration in a four-channel layout. Should I opt for two 16GB sticks instead? If so, why are there four channels?

AM4 supports only dual channels. For quad channel you’d need a Threadripper. I’d opt for 2x16 RAM personally. Ryzen tends to perform better with a 2x setup rather than 4x. This is the model I use and it’s Dual Rank. https://www.newegg.com/ballistix-32gb-28...6820164174

Backup more physical RAM. Am4 typically handles 128GB, but anything above 32GB is uncommon.

Max memory size. Until Ryzen, filling four DIMMs wasn’t a problem. It appears Ryzen performs better with roughly double the capacity compared to four times the amount. This might be linked to the chip’s memory controller.

2 DIMMs generally offer better stability at high speeds compared to 4, even though it requires more effort from the memory controller. T-topology boards were once more popular, and they often benefit from fully utilizing all four slots, whereas daisy-chain designs have improved significantly and can sometimes match or exceed T-tops. Zen2/3 provides a minor speed advantage when using two ranks per channel, whether that means two DIMMs or one dual-rank stick. This detail is less critical than having dual or quad-channel configurations on HEDT boards.
