I’m stopping my PC and thinking about setting up a NAS with SATA SSDs. My current machine has an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, and I’m wondering if it’s better to reuse the CPU or sell it for another purchase. I plan to use it for backing up media, running phones/laptops, and storing 4K videos while streaming via Jellyfin or Plex. Cheers, Edited April 5, 2024 by Luke30

It varies based on your goals. A simple NAS requires a lot of processing power.

essentially the PS5's processor functions like a CPU but runs quicker thanks to additional cache storage.

If I had your situation and could upgrade my 3700X, I’d definitely seize the chance to get a 5800X3D along with a good CPU cooler. But a better fit might be a 3200G for a newer system.

The processor handles most tasks well, but it struggles with 4K video conversion. For that, use a GPU whenever possible.

If you swapped your 3700x for an IGPU, would that work for you? You're aiming for a compact build with maximum efficiency, and you're handling the setup yourself.

Looking up the recommended 3200G online confirms it's usually okay. The Reddit discussion came up first, and choosing this path lets you upgrade to a dedicated GPU later if needed. Note that if the R3 model fits, the R5 and R7 versions would perform even better. It depends on your budget and any extra costs you're willing to handle.

It's also possible to perform transcoding on the IGPU.
