Planning to invest in AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X 24-Core 3.8 GHz . The number of cores are very appealing for my needs in ML/AI framework. I know everyone recommends the Ryzen 9 5900X for gaming, understandably why, however I am planning to have up to 512GB ram in the future and only Threadripper can make that happen for now (5900X stops at 128GB, currently I am at 160gb RAM). 3 questions: 1. Will I be relatively future-proof in terms of gaming performance (RTX 2070 onboard) for the next 5y, from a processor standpoint (I can always upgrade to the latest RTX when in stock)? 2. Is there any data supporting improved performance when both CPU and GPU are AMD vs GPU being NVIDIA? (assuming comparing equivalent GPU models) 3. Also do you guys know if Threadripper 3960X would benefit or even supports registered DIMM? What would be the best memory stick options for starting off with a 128GB RAM setup (MOBO will have 6-8 slots)? Thank you

Sure, you can also upgrade to the Zen 3 later. No, it doesn't matter. Instead, opt for a Threadripper Pro (models ending with WX) which offers 8-channel memory, 128 PCIe lanes, and registered ECC. Standard TR only supports up to 256GB RAM.

You may need to work around the VM to lower the number of available cores for games since not every setup handles this many cores well. 2. None. 3. Not compatible and wouldn’t gain from registered memory; they’re slower and not ideal for gaming. A 32GB stick multiplied by 8 gives roughly 256GB, which is likely what unregistered drives have been.
